The Challenge
Autism or ASD ( Autistic spectrum disorder) is a developmental disorder that has affected more than 70 million individuals worldwide, out of which 10 million are in India itself. It is a serious, incurable mental disorder that hampers one's ability to interact and communicate. Alfa Paediatric Rehabilitation Centre approached us with a crucial mission: to raise awareness about autism and reduce the stigma associated with it. They aimed to highlight the capabilities and talents of autistic individuals, especially in settings where they are often misunderstood or overlooked.
Our Approach
We decided to tell the story of Muhammed Aman, a 7-year-old autistic child who, despite being non-verbal, communicated his feelings and thoughts through Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) tools. His creativity blossomed into beautiful poetry, providing a unique perspective on his inner world.
We collaborated closely with Aman’s doctors and parents to understand the essence of his poetry and to respect his voice. The result was "Aman’s Poems," a book featuring 11 of his poems, each brought to life with rich illustrations inspired by the child’s words.
The Impact
The publication of "Aman’s Poems" sparked a significant shift in perception. Aman, previously isolated in his general school environment, suddenly found himself at the center of attention—not because of his autism, but because of his remarkable talent. His peers and the broader school community began to see him as a super-talented individual. The media coverage that followed amplified this message, encouraging a more inclusive and accepting attitude towards autistic individuals.
